Whisper to a Roar

Product Description

A WHISPER TO A ROAR focuses on the recent and ongoing struggles for democracy in Egypt (the Arab Spring), Malaysia, Ukraine (the Orange Revolution), Venezuela and Zimbabwe. Viewers have a front-row seat to history in the making as the filmmakers capture the first stirrings of revolution as they happened, with no idea that they would erupt when they did. The film spotlights the perilous costs of pro-democracy activists in these five countries as they battle against the authoritarian governments that have oppressed their people for decades. Shot over three eventful years by award-winner Ben Moses (creator and co-producer of Good Morning, Vietnam) and narrated by the acclaimed actor Alfred Molina, A WHISPER TO A ROAR was invited to screen at the U.S. State Department and U.S. Embassies and Consulates around the world before going on to a national release. The film uses original interviews and archival footage to document and draw parallels between pivotal moments in the five countries that have little in common except long periods of oppression. By turns shocking, enraging and inspiring, the film tracks the courageous efforts of pro-democracy leaders and protesters - from student leaders to prime ministers to heads of state, who share their compelling personal stories of struggle, past and present, with their countries' oppressive regimes. Among the figures covered are Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko, who was left disfigured from an attempted assassination by poisoning during his 2004 campaign for the presidency, and Hugo Chavez, the polarizing socialist Venezuelan president, who died on March 5.
